Over the last 4 years, huge strides have been made by your Conservative Council in Bournemouth to improve relations between students living in the community, and local residents.
One of the many programmes we have put in place has been the Student Community Warden scheme, where students living in the community act as "Road Wardens" to look after 2 or 3 roads near where they live. Wardens introduce themselves to new students, and get the students to introduce themselves to their neighbours in turn. Wardens teach new students the ABCs of living independently for the first time. Whether it's remembering to put out the bins, or to keep the noise down late at night, the Student Warden scheme has been a great success.
A reduction in crime is the most recent result to add to the long list of great outcomes from this scheme. Since the introduction of the Student Community Wardens (aka Road Wardens), reported crime has dropped by almost 20%!
Councillor Pat Oakley, a local resident turned activist turned local councillor, has worked tirelessly together with the university to put this scheme in place for Winton, and then to fine tune and improve it over time.
Said Councillor Oakley "This is another fantastic success to chalk up to the Warden Scheme, I'm very pleased."
Don McQueen, Trustee of Bournemouth University, and member of the Conservative Action Team for Winton commented "The University and Student Union have worked hard, together with Pat and the rest of the Winton councillors to achieve this fantastic result - well done to all concerned."
